The North Face: Train Smarter – Ski Mountaineering Ep. 3

I had the pleasure of climbing and skiing the Grand Teton on March 25, 2014 with George Hein and Zahan Billimoria, shooting George’s ski mountaineering story for The North Face. The adventure of a lifetime, this trip up the iconic mountain once again marks a milestone in my career as a skier, climber and photographer. It’s also my second time up there with Zahan, a true wild man, who took me up the Grand on my first trip to the summit back in August 2010…

Low Earth Orbit #02 :: Hiking Cody Peak

Dominating the skyline from the top of the tram, it’s a mountain that endures relentless winter storms as the gate keeper of Jackson Hole’s wild, adventurous backyard. Jagged limestone barriers guard the approach, pocked with fossilized remnants of past lives on the bottom of an ancient sea floor. The steep, snowy slopes above perpetually loom in the dark corners of the mind, demanding respect but always calling out with the most alluring of siren songs. On a map of the Tetons it’s just Point 10,799, but to any Jackson skier, it’s Cody Peak…

Low Earth Orbit #01 :: The R&D Reel

Low Earth Orbit #01 :: The R&D Reel from Tristan Greszko on Vimeo.

This fall, I set out on a road trip across the West – of no set length or itinerary – to test a new, smaller helicopter/camera setup. The original dream for Tiny Jackson (vimeo.com/21864555) was to shoot the whole thing from a helicopter, but in the real world that’d just be impractical and stupidly wasteful. So for two years now, I’ve been experimenting with different combinations of gear to find something that fits my needs – a small, light setup that will operate in any location, at any altitude, at a moment’s notice. Episode 01 is a collection of testing process highlights – some from this summer, some from 5 weeks on the road this fall, and some from the mountains so far this winter…

City of Rocks

City of Rocks from Tristan Greszko on Vimeo.

The City.

Massive granite domes and spires, some 2.5 billion years old and 600 feet high, rise out of the rolling sagebrush hills like a miniature Yosemite. Ant-like climbers cling to the folded walls and pinnacles, tiny astronauts surveying an alien landscape, while ravens circle high above and cast long shadows on cows mooing happily far below. Breezy summer afternoons are interrupted by massive storms billowing up off the Nevada desert to the southwest, turning the skies black with torrents of rain and sheets of lightning that threaten to send the entire landscape back to the bottom of the ocean. It’s a place of palpable history and nostalgia – one emigrant, headed west on the California Trail in the 1840s, likened the spectacle of rock to “water thrown up into the air from numerous artificial hydrants.”

The City of Rocks remains a place of wonder, tucked away in a remote pocket of the West, enchanting the minds of those who pass with its silent granite sirens, towering and ancient and beautiful.

GoPro Zenmuse Gimbal

I finally got my DJI Zenmuse H3-2D gimbal last week and I’ve been flying as much as possible – here’s a quick vid from the other night, just messing around on the downhill trails on Teton Pass:

I’ve posted some of Cyriak’s work before; my earlier praise still holds true. Here’s some of his latest work, a music vid for Bonobo’s new song Cirrus off their upcoming album The North Borders:
