The North Face: Train Smarter – Ski Mountaineering Ep. 3

I had the pleasure of climbing and skiing the Grand Teton on March 25, 2014 with George Hein and Zahan Billimoria, shooting George’s ski mountaineering story for The North Face. The adventure of a lifetime, this trip up the iconic mountain once again marks a milestone in my career as a skier, climber and photographer. It’s also my second time up there with Zahan, a true wild man, who took me up the Grand on my first trip to the summit back in August 2010…

Skiing the Grand

A week ago I climbed and skied the Grand Teton with George Hein and Zahan Billimoria as the on-slope videographer for the final episode of The North Face Mountain Athletics ski mountaineering series.  An epic day, to say the least – here’s a still of George about to drop into the middle section of the Ford Couloir:

Low Earth Orbit #02 :: Hiking Cody Peak

Low Earth Orbit #02 :: Hiking Cody Peak from Tristan Greszko on Vimeo.

Dominating the skyline from the top of the tram, it’s a mountain that endures relentless winter storms as the gate keeper of Jackson Hole’s wild, adventurous backyard. Jagged limestone barriers guard the approach, pocked with fossilized remnants of past lives on the bottom of an ancient sea floor. The steep, snowy slopes above perpetually loom in the dark corners of the mind, demanding respect but always calling out with the most alluring of siren songs. On a map of the Tetons it’s just Point 10,799, but to any Jackson skier, it’s Cody Peak…

Gothic Couloir

I’ve been digging through my archives lately, it’s pretty great to come across stuff like this that I’ve kinda forgotten about. Here’s a re-edit of a frame from Tiny JH – Hunter Wood dropping Gothic Couloir in the Jackson backcountry:

And why not, an animated gif too, yeah!

TGR :: One For the Road

TGR just dropped their new trailer for One For the Road. I spy Phantom slow-mos, cable cams, Brain Farm-ish heli scenics, lots of time lapses on motion rigs, and a new crop of riders – Tom Wallnuts, anyone…? Will the movie actually live up to the trailer?

This morning’s webcam view from the summit cam at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Not my photo necessarily, but I did help position the webcam way back when, so…

Yes, the Crags are my favorite spot to shoot. Hands down, no question. Nice ski patrollers shoot and throw a whole bunch of explosives in all the right spots, just so I can go out and have the best ski times of my life. And afterwards, when it goes sunny and blue? All the stashes are still fatty fat and ready to go. Here’s to many, many more sessions in the Crags, Wyoming USA.
